A 16th C Northern English coffer, also called the‘6 plank chest, or the rapier chest (due to its use of storing swords). This chest has archetypical Elizabeathan iconography, with the front panels displaying floral arcades, stylized tulips on the outer flanks, and 4 diminutive lozenges along the bottom. While it maintains the original faceplate and latch, the internal locking mechanism is unfortunately absent. The hinges for the lid are original, with blacksmith’s makers mark (often a sign of high quality). The top plank does show some warping , but closes well enough and the overall sturdiness of the piece is great- considering its immense age and the fact these types of coffers were often used for seating.
All in all, a quality and historical piece that is functional, attractive, and a of a manageable size.
