Our sitter is Major John Werge of the 38th Regiment of Foot (the "Thirty Eighth"). We know this is Major John Werge because of the description penciled on the reverse of the painting's board: "Major Werge Who Fell at San Sebastian 1813" The Thirty-Eighth, also called the 1st Staffordshire Regiment was a line infantry regiment with a storied history that fought many consequential battles, including during the Napoleonic Wars.
