A real throne! A 16/17thC oak wainscot chair with deep and crisp carvings. Likely from Northern England and estimated to have been made around 1650, a particularly tumultuous period in England’s history. The 17thC saw the country’s first and only experiment as a republic, which soon ended as Cromwell’s commonwealth, and his life, came to a bloody end in 1660, and ushering in a return of the monarchy and the crowning of King Charles II.
The upholstery was added much later on, providing a level of comfort to these normally spartan chairs. With its rich patina, bold and unique design , not to mention the piece being over 350 years old, makes this a great addition to anyone’s collection.
